Curtiss A25 Shrike
History Brief The A-25 Shrike was the USAAF variant of the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, a carrier-based dive bomber aircraft produced for the United States Navy during World War II. Nine hundred aircraft were ordered by the USAAF under the designation A-25A Shrike.

The Curtiss A-25 Shrike (AKA the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver) was a dive bomber developed by the United States in 1940 to replace the Douglas SBD Dauntless. Unfortunately, due to performance issues and delays, by the time the A-25 was ready for service thoroughbred dive bombers were no longer needed. This particular upload has an armament of 2x 500.

After the war, the A-25 continued to be in the Navy into 1947 and naval reserve units into 1950. Speed: 285 mph at 12,400 ft. Range: 1090 miles with 2000-lb bomb load. 900 delivered to US Army. Army eventually decided that it didn't need dive bombers, and the A-25 never entered combat. Most used as trainers and target tugs.

U.S. Army Air Force A-25 Shrike (AAF Ser. No. 41-18787) in flight. A World War II latecomer, the SB2C Helldiver was used for the first time in combat on 11 November 1943. Squadron VB-17 on the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) used Helldivers on a raid on Rabaul Port, on the island of New Britain north of Papua in New Guinea.

A-25A was to be almost identical to the SB2C-1, but with larger main wheels and a larger pneumatic tail wheel. The carrier arrester gear was deleted, but the folding wings were to be retained. In addition, Army radios and additional forward and underside armor plating were fitted.

The Curtiss A-25A Shrike was a version of the U.S. Navy's SB2C Helldiver. Built at Curtiss' St. Louis plant, 900 aircraft were ordered by the USAAF under the designation A-25A Shrike. The first ten aircraft had folding wings, while the remainder of the production order omitted this unnecessary feature.

The A-25 Shrike was a USAAF diver bomber based on the Navy's SB2C Helldiver. It was ordered late in 1940, after the Stuka had played such a prominent role in the German blitzkrieg in Poland and France. The Army Air Corps had not been interested in the dive bomber before this, and so no development programs were in place.
